Meet the Toxic Crew: Why is Fragrance bad?
Fragrance-free products are popping up on shelves all over the place. But why is fragrance so bad? Isn’t is just the ingredient to make your products smell nice? It is…however since fragrance is considered a trade-secret, companies do not have to disclose what makes up their fragrance. Therefore, lots of chemicals can be added to the mix.
Many of the ingredients used to maintain the scent of these products include phthalates. Phthalates have been linked to reproductive disorders in both males and females. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, fragrance is the number one cause of cosmetic contact dermatitis. Fragrance is also known to trigger reactive behavior and cause migraines, allergies, asthma and chronic lung disease.
When looking for products, try to avoid anything that has fragrance or parfum as an ingredient. Safer brands will disclose the essential oils that they use for scents.
